Tourmaline is a complex borosilicate mineral that occurs in a wide range of colors, including black, pink, green, blue, and multicolored varieties. It is valued for its hardness, durability, and unique optical properties, such as pleochroism (showing different colors from different angles).

Tourmaline forms in pegmatites and metamorphic rocks and is found in many parts of the world. Major sources include Brazil (Paraíba and Minas Gerais), Afghanistan, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the United States (California and Maine), and Nigeria. Brazilian and African tourmalines are particularly prized for their vivid colors.
